Design and screen
Sony's new small form phone is the hidden gem of the Xperia Z5 range.
The Xperia Z5 Compact has lost a lot of the bezel space that felt so redundant on the Z5, and feels a lot more concise than its bigger sibling.
The Xperia Z5 Compact follows closely the excellent design established by the Xperia Z5. It isn't drastically smaller than the Z5 – the Compact is 127 x 65 x 8.9mm, compared to 146 x 72 x 7.3mm. But it's enough to make a difference.
The Z5 Compact's screen is exceptionally bright, offers great contrast and accurate colours.
The increase in pixel density from 319ppi on the Z3 Compact to the 323ppi here does result in sharper screen quality and improved clarity. In addition, Sony includes its now standard Bravia TV-inspired display technologies such as a Triluminious display, X-Reality Engine and Bravia Engine 2.
Top of the list is the back style. It’s covered with frosted glass. It looks great, feels great and comes in a few different colours.
The star attraction of the phone, though, is what sits on its side. It looks like a power button, and it is. But that big grey button also functions as the Xperia Z5 Compact’s fingerprint scanner.
Waterproof
Xperia Z5 Compact is built to withstand the splashes that are a part of everyday life.Sony’s waterproof design takes the worry out of wet.
Camera
The most impressive feature by far on the Z5 Compact is the camera. It's simply one of the best I've used for image quality in all conditions.
Sony provides the imaging components for a great deal of major smartphone cameras, and has brought all its expertise to bear on the Z5 range. As such, it’s carrying one of the very best smartphone cameras on the market.
Autofocus is fast and accurate, and thanks to the 23MP sensor, photos have fantastic detail and clarity. It’s also great at picking up colour and depth, and snaps are vibrant even in low-light conditions.
Performance
An area where Sony doesn't compromise on with the Compact is power. Here you get a Snapdragon 810 processor made up of 1.5GHz quad-core Cortex A53 and 2GHz quad-core Cortex A57 CPUs. That's accompanied by 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 430 GPU to handle gaming. The Compact is a portable powerhouse.
Battery
If there's one area in which Sony phones do better than most it's going the distance. In moderate use, this is good enough to get you through a day and a half of playtime.
Significant is the inclusion of fast charging, which allows users to top up their devices with a quick, concentrated burst of power. This means that even if the Z5 Compact’s battery levels start dipping worryingly low, 12 to 15 minutes charging is all you’ll need to get them back up.
Stamina mode is the most effective, disabling app activity when the phone isn't in use; with it on you'll gains a couple of extra hours. There's an Ultra Stamina mode, too, which is a far more restrictive measure. However, it means you'll get an extra hour or two to make that late-night taxi call.
Verdict
The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is the best 4.6-inch Android phone available right now.
With Xperia Z5 Compact, the question isn’t just what you can do with your smartphone it is what else you can do. Sony’s best compact smartphone has all the features of the big guys, but it’s designed to slip right into real life. With colours that match your style. Innovations that keep interruptions at bay. And a 4.6” design that hits the sweet spot in size.
