Women's Day at STARBUCKS with Siren's Blend

Just in time for International Women's Day, Starbucks is launching a new coffee roast: The Siren's Blend. The name pays homage to Starbucks heritage and the siren, the company's symbol. The Siren's Blend was inspired (and created) by women who were at the forefront of coffee production. Siren's Blend was inspired by an old '90s blend called Siren's Note, created by Mary Williams, one of Starbucks' early coffee developers. Over 20 years later, Mary Mayorquin, Senior Manager of Global Coffee Strategy and Development, was inspired to reinvent this blend to honor the contribution of women in coffee production and to create a versatile blend never seen before in the range.

Mary Williams joined Starbucks in 1993 and was Senior Vice President of Coffee until she retired in 2003. In this role, her job was to ensure Starbucks served only the finest coffees in the world. She was therefore responsible for purchasing the raw coffee, searching for new coffees, roasting, mixing and developing the recipe. In addition, she has helped establish a stronger foundation for coffee training across the company. In a male-dominated industry, Mary Williams has broken down barriers with her unmatched taste buds and dedication to coffee farmers.

“The fact that the Siren's Blend was developed to honor women is something special and certainly a milestone to be very proud of. I never thought that this is possible! As with everything, there is always room for improvement. It is very exciting for me to witness this change and to see how the number of women in the coffee industry is growing. I look forward to what the future has in store for us,”

says Mary Williams.
