Last Friday night I had the great pleasure to attend the "Cena Enogastronomica" a food and wine journey at Villa Principe Leopoldo. It was a magnific culinary journey among the wine estates of Silvio Werner Denz, who is one of the ten most famous private wine collectors in the world.
The location doesn't really need any presentations as it is well-known and truly spectacular.
Villa Principe Leopoldo is the former private home of German Emperor Wilhelm's brother in law and thanks to its location on a promontory on the Collina d'Oro it boasts probably the best view over lake Lugano. It is really breathtaking!
The atmosphere of the hotel somehow manages to combine a five star service while keeping a familiar warmth.
For this special occasion Chef Dario Ranza has surprised us and the other guests with a dedicated menu and matching prestigious wines.
During the dinner we had the pleasure to taste some of the best wines produced at Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Péby-Faugères and Faugères. Starting with the very fine Champagne Barnaut à Bouzy Grand Cru 2006 and ending with the faboulous Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey Sauternes 1er Grand Cru classé 2005.
We started the dinner with the Château Faugères Blanc 2015 followed by Château Laufarie-Peyraguey, grand vin sec 2015 and Château Faugères Grand Cru Classé 2009. We also had the great pleasure to taste the Château Péby-Faugères Grand Cru Classé 2000 and Château Péby-Faugères Grand Cru Classé 2007.
Chef Dario Ranza managed to combine these fabulous wines with sought after dishes specially created for the occasion in such a way to make stand out the scents and aromas.
Dario Ranza has been the chef and face of Restaurant Principe Leopoldo for 27 years now and he is appreciated by all the best international guides such as Les Grandes Tables, Gault Millau and Le Soste. The award-winning chef, respectful of raw materials and traditions, with his light and creative hand, gave rise to surprising menus from the region of his origins in the Bergamo area.
2017 is surely a special year for Villa Principe Leopoldo as it celebrated 30 years of excellence in hospitality in a magical atmosphere of the 1930's and which saw an open day with guided tours for the public to discover the Villa and its best kept secrets. Surely a special birthday, too as it saw the rebranding of the logo, the launch of the new website and the pubblication of the book "Trent'anni di eccellenza" which gathers the most exciting moments in the history of the Villa from 1986 until today.
